Re: Dual purpose Alternator/Reverser
The Suzuki GT185 had an alternator which doubled as a starter motor.... so, in theory, yes!

Re: EbayUK Honda 500cc V twin Feb 2nd 2012
Hi Tim.... I'm still in the process of building, but will be running it with the flywheel on the right, belt drive (1:2) ratio to a dummy crank in a Rotax 350 bottom end... and then the clutch and gearbox is as Rotax intended! I have a build thread here, more details will be added when the weather i...

That's an 18.5cc engine! Would need considerable scaling up to make it useful!

Hi XLerate! Welcome aboard! You're following the exact same path as me! I'm using the bottom end of a H-D MT350 as my "gearbox".... and yes, I'm having a straight shaft made up to replace the crank... I've been told I need EN36 steel.... Does the GS550E have roller/ball main bearings?? If ...

What grade of steel.....?
I need a shaft making up to replace the crankshaft in my bottom-end that I'm using as a gearbox.... It needs to be 260mm long, and 35mm in diameter over much of it's length... It will run in two big ball bearings, and have my primary (belt) drive pulley on it's outboard end... So what grade of steel...

looking good there!!!
having had a standard K100, my guess is that the seat will fit with no problems.... and probably the tank too... I'd like to see the other side before giving a more definate assessment......
But remember, K tanks are ally..so not as bash-able as steel ones!

OK...so time for an update..... As I mentioned before, I've acquired a Rotax 350 engine to use the gearbox from.... Whole engine cost me £150..and I made £180 on selling the bits i dont need..so a result there! My chosen chassis is a BMW R100...I originally planned to do a guzzi style v-twin... but ...

We should take this VERY seriously!!!! The EU is trying to ensure that manufacturers' figures for emisions etc remain accurate for the life of the vehicle... This means that ANY interference with the drivetrain would be banned... It would be prohibited to change ANYTHING from the throttle cable to t...

Hi Ron... that engine looks perfect for my needs, but ATCs never really took off over here.... The Rotax 350 lump is similar, and yes I do plan to stand in on end!

Re: hello from Towcester.
Hi Dan... You're going to hate me! But first, ccw rotation is what you need if the primary drive is to be on the left, that old brit gearbox would do the job, as input and output rotate the same way.... so looking from the left of the bike engine, gearbox in/out and wheels all go ccw. If you want to...

Re: R65 BMW + clone ?
I'm not at all sure it'll fit! The BMW chassis is not very deep chested, I guess coz the boxer engine is a/ not very tall and b/ hangs between the rails... I'm going to have to modify my BMW R100 frame to get my Honda V-twin in. On the later bikes, the frame number is stamped into the lower right fr...

Hi Lardy... well..... the obvious answer is to put the engine between the back wheels, like it was between the front wheels of the Escort.... Or, if you must have it between your legs, dont use the original Escort gearbox.... A Sierra one should fit the Escort motor, with few if any mods (Ford were ...

So.. I bit the bullet today! Having just failed to secure my Rotax bottom end on Ebay.... I bought a whole engine! The bottom end went for 57 quid...and i paid 150 for a complete engine.... i figure i can strip off the bits i dont want, and sell them on ebay, I'll have head, barrel and piston, crank...

Well, Honda did it with the CB400A, and a 750 version..
they used a car style torque converter, and a 2 speed gearbox giving low/hig ranges... the 400 was strangely nice to ride. despite losing a shed load of power thru the transmission....

Re: New Build... third time lucky!
With you on the crank collars.... but there will also be end thrust on the clutch shaft...which will try to pull the shaft out of the casing, rather than push it in.... there's a thrust washer behind the clutch, i believe, but not one at the other end of the shaft...

Re: New Build... third time lucky!
Except, now I do!
The crank/clutch gears on all bikes that I know of are helical!
Helical gears produce end thrust on their shafts....which in the case of the gearbox input shaft, is taken by a thrust bearing behind the clutch..
Reverse the direction of rotation, and you reverse the end thrust.....

Re: New Build... third time lucky!
I understand, coach...but i want to avoid the intermediate jack shaft, and thus one belt or chain.... so 1:2 belt from flywheel end of crank to dummy crankshaft in the 2-stroke cases.... and then chain to the back wheel.... at about the original ratio.... keeps my belt/chain count low.... And I dont...
