Re: Engine tuning for effiency
A turbo without increasing the fuelling accordingly would probably clean up exhaust emissions, but only if your current set up is over fuelling the engine already. If that is the case (any black or grey smoke coming out the back?) then you may also gain a marginal power increase too. But I wonder ab...

Re: 13 hp yanclone lacks power
Just a thought.. Even if your fuelling is adjusted sufficient for full torque output, if the upper engine speed is not adjusted for a non loaded 3800, the engine will not be able to rev out under full load to 3600, even if it can ascend to 3600 in the lower gears. Even if the engine smokes at higher...

Perhaps you have long since resolved your low power problem, as it is actually very straightforward. But for what it's worth, yes, you are very much overgeared! Apart from personal experimentation with sprocket sizes on my 186 8.5 bhp diesel, all the way from its original 19T fitted by Henry Price a...

Re: hero motocorp karizma 400cc diesel reviews..
All statistics are for the petrol engine. A DI diesel of 400cc would struggle to generate 10 bhp @ 3600, much less 30 bhp. Fuel consumption of 30km/ltre (85 mpg) is reasonable for a 400 petrol single, but downright derv guzzling for a diesel of the same size. Since I'm getting 170 mpg out of my Enfi...

Re: Spark Ignition Diesel - a better engine ?
The use of a lower compression ratio in a diesel reduces the efficiency of the thermodynamic cycle it operates on. So whilst it's possible to get a more civilised, lighter engine running on diesel, it won't be as efficient. If I read it right their research proved you wrong. Though the efficency im...

Re: At last, roadgoing
Do you guys set the "mystery" (spring loaden) adjuster so it's active, meaning that the spring in the adjuster is compressed when running full power, or is it adjusted to just tuch at full power. The answer to that is neither! The governor itself compresses the sprung plunger fully when f...

Re: adjusting screw 418 china diesel
Hi Arnaud. Manufacturer advises to wind the screw in until it very lightly touches the governor lever, with the engine off obviously. Make sure that the spring plunger on the end of the screw moves in & out freely. That tiny movement is your only means of accellerating! The above setting may wor...

Re: 10hp (Enfield/Yanmar combo) - some observations on gearing
I swapped 16t for 18t and it did improve top end a bit, but perhaps Dutch wind combined with a 6'5" rider is also a limiting factor :D On my 350km trip home I managed to reach 80-85 on the speedo and on rare occasions 95. My engine doesn't smoke, so it might be tuned a bit lean. Hi buddy, than...

Re: 10hp (Enfield/Yanmar combo) - some observations on gearing
With 16t I rode the Enfield last Sunday, it wouldn't go past 80 on the speedo. Unfortunately we didn't have an rpm meter handy, so I don't know if the engine puts out 3600 at max throttle, Nanko set it up using the stroboscopic effect and then some. It pulls nicely and I don't have any problem with...

Please... try... fourth... :D P.s Note that on the level my bike topped out in 3rd at 53 mph & 3800, (just 2 mph shy of a 17 sprocket @ 3600), at which the governor then pulled the fuelling right back, & the engine became super smooth, while in 4th it sank down to 48 mph & 2800, even WI...

Re: Enfield + Yanmar 10HP + vibes
Is your yanclone fitted with a balancer shaft? If so, it will be far smoother than a petrol Enfield, which is an undersquare design, (small bore long stroke). Not done very many miles yet on mine, but the engine is silky smooth in terms of reciprocal mass, & seems to get smoother the higher the ...

Re: Enfield + 10HP = 55mph Max (GPS)
Snoopy, with a 19 inch rear wheel & standard tyre, an 18 gearbox sprocket will give 58.3 mph @ 3600. Although this is slightly beyond the capabilities of a 406 yanclone on dead level ground & calm conditions. (I'm assuming this is the engine you have from the power quoted) - although my 406 ...

John - just for reference, the speeds quoted in my post are correct. I replaced my km/h speedo with a mph one and have tested it with GPS many times - it is absolutely spot on. Whilst that's nice from a "knowing my speed" perspective (and for making observations such as the one I made at ...

Hi John, would it be possible to do this modification after the running in period, and try it in 4th @ 3600 rpm? Hi Sphere. I've been for a run today, & reached an intriguing conclusion. The engine, while reaching an easy 3800 without load, can't seem to exceed 3400 in 3rd (47 mph by gps) (it i...

I have no experience of the 13 hp Winsun, but if your concern in mounting it is excessive load, then whatever gearbox you go with, the obvious solution is to reduce the gearbox sprocket tooth number. I have just taken my 406 yanclone out for the first time yesterday. I have a 19T gearbox sprocket wi...

400 cc yanclones are not torque monsters. equivilant to 400cc petrol in torque? Margionally better orr? A 406 Yanclone is basically equal to a soft tune 280 cc petrol single in terms of peak torque, or approximately similar peak torque to a good 250 jap single. At 3600, the Yanclone develops a tad ...

Re: What needs to change to make Yanmar L engines do high RPM?
John I've never taken the engine to 4900rpm where did you get that figure from? The Yanclones display a degree of diesel knock, even my gen set is loud and I have never touched it from new except for general maintenance. The Yanclones in Australia seem to be set for 10hp, not the 8.8. Thought I'd b...

Re: Conversions from the 50s
The Perugina 175 could only have been a model name. No 175cc capacity diesel could possibly make the 10 hp necessary for a 60 mph + top speed. The 191cc Sachs two stroke in the Messerschmitt bubble car only developed 9.7 bhp. Very nice looking conversion though. Our industrial lumps, while they get ...

Re: Conversions from the 50s
Perhaps the high output compared with modern diesels, which are almost exclusively direct injection, - was indirect injection? The ante chamber gives the fuel more time to fully combust, allowing higher usable rev ceilings. Direct injection in cars is a relatively new thing, because until superior m...

Re: Power Problem with your Enfield? If so try this
I may be overlooking this in your post, but if you travel at speed xx and your engine revs at 3600rpm or 3000rpm, the former enginespeed will consume more fuel. This is assuming a level surface. So with a 16t on secondary roads, I may have to rev all the way to 3600, while with a 19/20t I probably ...

Re: What needs to change to make Yanmar L engines do high RPM?
So, there's a couple ways to attack the RPM problem. What are the Yanmar's mechanical weak points, when it comes to high RPM (4000-5000 RPM)? How can they be fixed? Apart from extending the usable range of each individual gear, the other advantage of more revs, is potentially more available power. ...

Some of the singles like the Robin's etc had lower compressions "from memory" and still knocked. Actually Andrew, the Fuji Robin had an unusually high CR of 21:1. It was also an under square engine (long stroke / small bore) Our Yanclones are very over square & have a compression of 1...
