adjusting screw 418 china diesel

Post by arnaud »

Hi, my bike smoked a lot.. i found the cause, the adjsuting screw, held in place by a sping(just like the air mix screw of a carburettor) vibrated way loose.
The holiday is coming, what's a good guideline to set this screw std?

Hi Arnaud. Manufacturer advises to wind the screw in until it very lightly touches the governor lever, with the engine off obviously. Make sure that the spring plunger on the end of the screw moves in & out freely. That tiny movement is your only means of accellerating! The above setting may work fine at constant full revs on generator sets, but I found it a little on the lean side for bike propulsion. The engine felt very flat & took an age to reach maximum speed in each ratio. But it's a good starting point. The best end result will only be found through trial. From lightly touching the lever, wind it out one quarter turn, then go for a run. If that's not enough to give full power, then give it another quarter turn & so on. It really does make a big difference even with such a small movement. When the engine feels strong & reaches full speed in top on the level with reasonable vigour, yet produces barely visible smoke on full throttle & revs, you're there.

Well i reapetd what i did before, against strong wind and setting the screw back untill it starts to losse power, then half a twist back.. the spring which should hold it in position is a little too weak, i degreased it and applied some second-glue on it.
after 3600km through France, it is still in place!
