Post by zarquon »

Here it is! the cheapest car in the world.

And Tata accounced a diesel version later this year. It's told to have two cylinders, 623cc and 28hp. What do you think?

Hi Rafael :D One wonders what Diesel engine they will choose for the Diesel version :?: Isn't there another small car (seen at recent German rally) with a Kubota engine installed :?: I can't see them designing a new one what with the costs and all. Which one will they pick off the shelf :?:

Gentlemen,

Lombardini has had one in development that might be a nice fit for such an application.

I would bet money that they'll find an engine manufacturer in India for their diesel power

Maybe Mahindra? http://www.mahindra.com/index.asp

From what I've found online Bosch will be supplying a common rail injection system for the engine. Here's an excerpt from economictimes.indiatimes.com:
Bosch is supplying common rail direct injection (CRDi) systems for the diesel Nano as well as engine control units (ECUs) for both the powertrain variants. It cut cost on the normally expensive CRDi system by using a single plunger pump instead of three, opting for lower pressure and sourcing locally-made pumps. The ECU, too, is smaller and cheaper. The sensors are less complicated, but with more intelligent software.
I also saw somewhere the Nano is expected to get 54 miles US /64.8 imp. gal. I would have thought it would be better than that - my 17 year old 3 cylinder Pontiac Firefly (aka Geo Metro) despite weighing more and with 60 percent more horsepower, averages 55.4 miles/US gal 66.5 miles/imp. gal.

That little Tata is getting a lot of publicity, even here in OZ.

Chuck one of those V-Twin Diesels in for that distinctive note, something that is air cooled and with a reliable transmission "I think the Tata's belt driven = probably CVT?" and you have a good shopping trolley .............. lol.

With the ridiculous price of fuel, I reckon they will sell.

HERE WE GO = MAINSTREAM MEDIA BEING NEGATIVE:

When they featured here they made the point of no A/C, power steering etc, what a joke, is that all they think of = power steering? ya gotta be kidding, if you couldn't steer this thing without it you've got problems.

As far as A/C = install a small electric system, there under development now using advanced hydrocarbon refrigerants.

You just cannot please everyone hay! Next they will say there hard to drive because they don't have GPS, a 6 speaker surround sound system and electronic everything = PLEASE!

No wonder I don't watch TV much anymore?

Cheers

It's a nice car, but it's not road-legal for Western-Europe, since it (judging by the price) doesn't have airbags.

Just my $.02 worth:
Would like a diesel Tata as a local toy runabout, but the compressed air car will never work. Did a lot of research in to compressed air drive back in the late 70's and you just can't get enough air in a bottle to go far down the road.
After that, got into tinkering with steam power and found that you can't carry enough wood/propane/whatever to go far down the road either. Yes, the Stanley Steamer was a wonderful machine, but the electric starter put it in the grave. To me, diesel is the ultimate motive power source for small affordable transportation. Really like the diesel micro cars that we can't get here in the states

Air Car is claimed to be able use either compressed air or whatever fuel is available. Driving with "tradtional" engine also "recharges" air tanks.
that should do it

It will be interesting to see how the air motor works out. The inventor is definitely determined - Airbus is contracted to make the air tanks and now Tata to build the car. The design is definitely the result of "outside the box" thinking, e.g. the articulated conrod. It's not an ordinary piston engine with an airline screwed into the spark plug holes, or an air tool motor with a pulley on it.

On a related note, yesterday Keelynet reported a teenager from Uzbekistan has converted his friend's old car to not only run on air, but the air tank refills itself. The drawings and calculations have been sent to specialists in Germany. Who knows?

FWIW

Small Diesel

Post by Cockney Bob »

The small car using the Kyuboto diesel is called the Aixom it is plastic bodied as well and as it is so light it appears to have not needed crash test regulation pass. It can also be driven on a motorcycle licence in the UK.

It is not in the arrival brightly planned. But in the Dreams Men Dream along the way we find the Golden road to Samarkand.
