what type of case vent on that gearbox stuart ? if its blocked or restricted it could build presure and leak easiest wayout.

I'm no expert but I don't think there is a vent. If there was I think it would certainly help the situation a bit. Maybe tap a hole and fit a little something?

Considering the same box was used on the mighty Interceptor without issue...........

However if sealed bearings have been used then this might be partly to blame for making the box more airtight.

Maybe a banjo bolt and hose, out of the back of the box, run it up the frame and top it off with a small filter?

Without issue? Royal Oilfields? They had grease or grease and oil, as the boxes did leek.

I bet the oil is coming through between the sleeve and bearing, down the grooves in the sleeve, down through the spacer grooves and then drips between the spacer and sprocket.
It maybe a good idea to use some gasket material to make a simple round gasket to go between the sprocket and spacer. Any oil will be diverted to the nut, which if you fit a 2002 on nut and seal will be the end of the problems. Hopefully.

Almost 40 years ago in my ignorant youth I used run a lathe that was fitted with a 3 speeder transmission from a 30.50 Indian Junior Scout. I guess if a bike transmission works good in a lathe, a lathe gearbox should be a cracker in a bike!

Glad you're back on the road, by the way my Harley has a little tube from the crankcase running back to the chain. One man's oil leak is another man's automatic chain oiler. Just don't forget to check the oil level, that's all. Speaking of relatives, don't park it in the in-law's driveway (don't ask me why!)

I loose a little oil from the gearbox between the input/output shaft and also a little from the chaincase when I first filled it up and placed a little more then needed.

A few drops Stuart I wouldn't worry about, keep an eye on oil levels. The box should have a plug at the rear for levels and as you'd know the chaincase has one to. Always wondered how the heck you'd know a grease level ............... lol. I'm running a runny oily gooo in the box without any hassles so far "Fingers crossed"

Ok guys, I'll keep a close eye on the levels. It does feel noticable different with oil in instead of the 'grease goo' Important thing is I can get her over to the rally ok now without having to resort to putting her in a van.

My 'box was grease filled. It's had some Molyslip courtesy of Diesel Dave and I've since topped it up to the fill plug with gear oil. Adding the oil in has been a revelation - much smoother gear changes and a few less neutrals!

No GEAR oil on the garage floor either. Diesel, engine oil and ATF fluid are another conversation entirely!

I was getting a bit fed up with the bike marking it's territory with a slowly spreading circle of oil so decided to top her up more with grease this time round. It seems to have had the desired affect, almost, it that it's almost sealed the leak point. I just have a small leak now
I had a pot of Castrol grease and so warmed it until hot on the stove, tipped it into a plastic bottle with spout and before that melted, I poured it into the box. My brother tells me it's much better in operation feeling smoother an improvement I think Don't ask me what the grease was as I don't know
