Enfield extended mainshaft?

Post by Anorak_ian »

Hi, I need information about the 40mm extended Royal Enfield gearbox main shaft.
I know that Sommer sell them in Germany, but where are they made?
I'm looking for one with a Norton six spline end, so I can fit a Commando clutch to my Enfield box.
The other thing is I'm not sure that 40mm would be spot on for my bike, so tailor made would be best. Any info on manufactures in the UK would be gratefully received.

Cheers
Ian :)

If this is the Pricepartmotorcycles from Gloucester then I will not be buying another thing from him. :x

He sold me a Bullet clutch said to be in usable condition “I would have no hesitation to reuse this clutch”. I wish he had! It was nailed, worn bearings, worn bearing surface on the clutch centre and basket. In fact the only thing that I could use again was the plates and they needed dressing down with a file (and I already have 2 new sets). Oh almost forgot to say 4 or 5 bearings were missing. He can't even rebuild an old clutch. Glad I didn't buy a bike from him.

Let me tell you about the gearbox he sent me:
Arrived in a cardboard box drenched in stinking black oil, and the main shaft sticking out of the side (bye bye threads, or did he hit it with a hammer) the postman loved that.
Most bolts loose or hand tight, and a loose cracked outer case cos he didn't know how to put the thing back together properly. Main shaft shot, main case missing its brass lay shaft cover and sprocket right off. He even said the sprocket was a 16 tooth!

In his defense he did say that he didn't know what the box was like as he only took it off a working bike, “There is no warranty or guarantee with this item so please satisfy yourselves on the condition before bidding”. What from a photo and a crap description?

So I'll forgive him the parts he couldn't see from the out side: Inner case damaged and both bearings shot.

If you buy a bolt from this bloke make sure to ask him if it has a shaft and a head, but you will probably end up with something from a sex shop!

Of course this may not be the same Pricepartmotorcycles

Hi

If you want a new shaft, then you could try the guy I purchased my shaft from senhero@hotmail.com , the guy is from india and seems helpful and does deliver.

My local guys here in Australia where unhelpful, and didn't want to know about special orders - so I just took my business elsewhere - simple as that.

Anyway, give him a go = he might be able to help you

The shaft your after is the extended Taurus shaft - just be sure to tell who ever your ordering the parts from, or you'll more likely get the wrong one.

Cheers

Thanks for the link, I know I can get them from Germany but £60 is a bit much, it would probably be cheaper from your contact.
But I think I'll hold off getting one just yet, I hope to use a Norton Commando belt drive clutch on my Enfield gearbox, this means modding the clutch and this may have the effect of moving it closer to the gearbox. If I move the box out to meet it, add some spacers to the rear sprocket to move that out, and modify the gearbox sprocket so it's closer to the box, it just may fit with out the new shaft (shove everything about till it fits). :)

Hi Ian

A belt drive would be a nice alternative. If you should go the way of using the Enfield box, Hero charged me around $36 AUD plus postage, so in the UK it should be a lot cheaper than that. Your pound is over twice the value of the Aussie Dollar.

I purchase a lot of stuff from him so I couldn't give you an estimate on postage.

Cheers
