New Build

Post by addicted »

Well I have been waiting 1 year now to do this project and I'm finally doing it.

Yesterday I was able to obtain a 1973 Kawasaki Longhorn Enduro 350 for the great price of FREE!!!! The engine went toast but the rest is good to go minus a broken tail light.

I don't know anything about this bike but will know more when I go to pick it up later in the week. Pretty sweet looking. I like to think of it as VINTAGE :D

I purchased my engine 10HP Clone for $540 shipped off ebay this morning and expect it about the same time I get the bike near the end of the week.

I don't know what the tranny is like on this bike but most of the reading I've done is to focus on the comet series torque converters. It seems that the 500 series is the way to go and I'm sure it is. But considering it cost more than the engine itself I was wondering how the others have been working for others.

I noticed Rick was using a 40 series but I think he had a 6hp engine. My trip into work is 22 miles and I only have about 5 stoplights so most of the time would be at speed. This is obviously a on the budget project so if a 40 series that cost 100 would work almost as well as a 500 series that cost 600 I would be game for that.

I'm hoping to get 60MPH out of this thing but if I can at least get 55 I would be able to survive the roats. I have a feeling the rear sprocket is geared a lot lower than most of your road bikes but again I don't know as I've never owned a motorcyle and have ridden very few.

I also noticed someone else was using a 44 and 40 series combined for their unit. Not sure what size engine they are running.

Any of you out there running dirtbikes?

Thank you and I'll be on here a lot more as I put this thing together. Hopefully I can get it going by the beggining of next month depending on the transmission I chose.

Jason,
To use that frame and a Comet with your 10hp clone, you will need to do some mods for more room. These engines are tall (taller than the origianal engine that came with the bike) and using the Comet will make for additional space behind the engine. A lot of guys try and use frames that are quite small and end up having to do more work to the frame than they bargined for. Before you tear into the frame, consider that the Comet will need 9-1/2 inches from the engines crankshaft to the center line of the jackshaft and the Comets driven pulley is about 7-1/2" in diameter. If you try to mount the Comet closer, you will have very little room for you throttle bracket. More room is better than not enough

Yeah, I'm using a series 40 and it's working out fine. I talked with the guys at Comet, and was told even the 30 series would suffice for 6 hp. I was going to go that route but decided on the 40 instead in case I wanted to go bigger hp later.
As far as pricing, I got most of my stuff off eBay. There are a few guys that deal in gokart stuff and if you keep an eye on it, it'll go cheap. I bought my whole setup, brand new driver, driven, and belt for around 150. They sell the 50 series for not much more..

Yes I know th engine is quite a bit smaler. I don't mind doing frame modification. I like piddling around in the garage with the welder and cut off tools :). Just hopefully the bike allows for that much room. If not well I have a free bike to barter for another one :)

So they make a 50 series eh? Yes I see that the 40 seires are around 100 for the main unit. But besides a belt what else do you need? Brackets, covers....?

Also I will do more looking but when I look on Ebay on the 4 seiries one seller says the engagement speed is 1600-2000 and the other 1600-3100. If it was the later it would be great for our motors since they max at 3600.

Rick can you tell me more about your set up.
