Turbo Ordered

I ordered my turbo this past weekend. Total came to $457cnd. with shipping included. MBE Motorsports http://www.mbe-motorsports.com/catalog/ ... cts_id/265 can also supply the exhaut flanges, gaskets, oil fittings and stainless hardware. I bought the works as it will save alot of time. The set delivery is December 22 but we will see. I plan on setting my max fuel stop for about 75 mph hopefully it won't blow up. As it has gone 74mph when it was fresh and new I'm hoping I can go this fast without the large black cloud. I will post progress under my build section when I get going on it in the new year

MBE was good to there word the turbo arrived yesterday. I'm short the oil fitting but I'm sure they will send it. Then there is Canada Post that left the $350 box on the front step for everyone to see without anybody home to sign for it.

i think canada post workers are still choked about being forced back to work, postal service has sucked since then.
are you fitting an intercooler to your unit?

I'm going to try it without a intercooler to start with. I'm looking and some very modest boost just enought to clear the black smoke up to around 75mph. I will set the max fuel stop so it won't go past this point. If I pass a car going 80kph the black cloud is bad probably do to the fact the engine ony has 15hp. If I can bump this to somewhere north of 20 hp I'll be happy. Also I love turbo whistle.

best of luck, im pulling my engine again, time for intercooler and a few other mods, i will take pix of the fuel stop i added, much better and easier to adjust, it works very well and it can be adjusted so there is no smoke at all, the turbo really makes the intake charge hot, so hot it starts to idle funny, time for the intercooler.
I'll do what i feel.

I have looked around at intercoolers and have not found one at a reasonable price. I have always had trouble getting heat into the engine on anything but hot summer days. I ride around most of the time with half the oil cooler taped off. This will change for sure I'm looking at a dual EGT from Aircraft Spruce no better way to do the final tweek on the fuel balance. The booklet that came with the engine says 18+-1 degree for fuel timing and the Kingpoo site says 20+-1. I'm going to start 18 which is where it was set last year and see how it works.

Can't wait to hear the progress you guys make with your turbo applications. I've always feared the oil delivery on the clones was a bit suspect which steered me away from considering a turbo. The RB Racing treatise on turbo oil supply is worth reading. I like that they go with a separate oil supply for the turbo, and a 90 second delay on the turbo oil supply that continues to supply the turbo with oil for 90 seconds beyond shut down. Of course cost is quite another matter. Failure to cool the turbo with new oil makes for very short turbo life.

And then there's the matter of seal failure. Below are several examples of runaway diesels being fueled by engine oil from the turbo - the proverbial "self-perpetuating diesel". Best experienced from a safe distance with a lawn chair and a beer. The RPM's they can achieve is scary.

When still considering a turbo I picked up one of these to test out as an emergency shut-down device. Since it's water tight, I reasoned it might be reasonably air tight. Comes in 1/2" increments and can be plumbed in line with your intake hoses. The local RV salvage yard has them by the bin full as they are waste water gate valves from motor homes. So much more civil than trying to stuff a rag into the intake. And if you paint the handle red, you can pretend you're behind the tiller of a Detroit. Pic is a little dark, but shows the gate half closed.

I have a Daihatsu-ural with turbo...like your emergency stop idea. I have told myself I'll sacrfice a glove (and a turbo, I guess) if runaway ever happens...this would be more elegant and economical!

I was thinking of a ball valve to shut off the oil supply to the turbo

Not that hard to build a guillotine type shut off valve like the RV unit, but out of steel. All the RV waste valves I've ever seen are real lightweight plastic with a simple rubber O ring to seal at sliding plate. Not sure that's enough on a large displacement diesel? O ring could be sucked into engine, still allowing diesel to keep on running till it blows.

On larger diesels [over 2L] trying to stop a runaway with your hand will get you a new nickname: 'STUBBY'! Yes, it has happened with tragic results.

I've thought about it some & my solution is a flapper valve like a carburetor throttle plate, oriented so that once closed the intake vacuum would hold plate closed until engine stops. Actually the same as some exhaust brakes but used at air intake instead. Easier to build than a guillotine type, more positive control & very unobtrusive, not some big thing hanging out there.
