Hi all,
I am enquiring about a Diahatsu 998 turbo diesel engine only and wonder about the complexities of fitting such into a Dnepr. Are there electrical control boxes which would need to be obtained and is the turbo a problem. I can also buy a complete 1992 car which would have all the necessary engine & gear but non turbo. I have not seen the turbo engine to access its suitability.Anyone any experience with this engine?
John.

I expect the only electric control is for the glow plugs and you could easily wire something else up for that.
I could get you a suitable proper glow plug relay and explain how to wire one.
The injection pump is a Japanese Bosch VE copy. see

At that age it is unlikely to have any additional electric control. If it does it will be easy to deal with.
There is at least one bike with this engine - possibly a few.

Hi Johnny,
Yeah I have a Dnepr and also a 10hp 650cc engine which I intended running on veggie oil but am also conscidering the power of the diahatsu as one has become available. My original thoughts were based around fuel economy and independance from oil suppliers but maybe I would find it hard to live with the slow speeds but then If I go the diahatsu route would it not be as well to run an ordinary petrol bike as fuel economy would not be markedly different. Decisions decisions decisions!

hi john, the tdi is good for 80 mpg in the car, should do 100 mpg if you were to gear it up a bit.what is the 10hp 650 engine you were going to use? obviously you need all the ancillaries off the car - fuel filter, exhaust parts etc - i notice hayden even uses the heavy duty battery on his ratbike! you might look at using some of the guages too as they're sorted for this engine - temp. guage for the radiator (assuming you use the daihatsu one) etc. how are you planning on getting the power to the back wheel? cheers jonny
