Engine running backwards, twin owners beware.

Post by Anorak_ian »

Due to a blown head gasket, I had to take my engine apart (Ruggerini RD211 954cc twin), what I found wasn't nice. :(

There was soot and oil and hard bits of carbon all over both valves in & out (both sides), piston, rings, heads and air in take and air filter. Everything was coated.

It took me a while to suss out what had happened.
When kick-starting the bike and not giving it enough of a kick, some times the pistons would be pushed back down the cylinder due to the high compression. The flywheel now running in the wrong direction, and the engine would start running backwards.
The air was being suck from the exhaust and all the crap in it was sucked in to the engine and out of the air filter.
I am now half way through a top end re build.

This ends all thoughts of taking the starter motor off my bike to save weight.
I'm now looking to fit a bigger battery to cope with the power hungry starter motor.

By the way, I have found that these starter motors have a direct short to earth if you over tighten the live cable nut, even by a slight amount.
I have tested two starters, both had this problem. Almost a year after the last electrical catastrophe (Hamm 2012) I have sussed out that these starters are well dodgy.
A tempory cure is to fit one thin nut 3/4 the way down the thread, then fit the cable and nut.
In the owners manual it states the live output from the reg rec goes to the starter, then on to the battery (this is why my battery didn't charge and eventually died at Hamm last year). I shall be changing this so the charging cable goes direct to the battery live, so I can un hook the starter cable if need be.

Thanx for info.
I have experienced the same reverse firing ( smoke in the air filter ) when kick starting my old Yanmar L100 build ( although only one reverse firing at a time ).

with the Ruggerini MD151 I am not able to kick start it ( no decompressor valve / valve lifter ), so I have left out the kick start pedal.

i am using a Koyo KTZ14S battery that does the job splendid.

Output from rectifier goes t0 the starter live nut and a quite heavy wire from live nut to the battery.

Does overtighning the starter live nut give ground short from inside the starter ?

Interesting stuff Ian - again if I get as far as putting a valve lifter on my Hatz 2G40 I'll let you know.
Have you taken your starter motors apart at all? Are they the heavy cast iron type without an internal gear reduction?
I've picked up an alloy one with internal gear reduction (allows a small, lighter, faster spinning motor) that's probably 3Kg lighter than the original and *should* take less power. Was about £70 from Manchester Auto Electrical..

Hi, I have no decompressor or valve lifter either, just give it plenty of leg
Yes, the short is from inside the starter, yesterday I noticed that the contact bolt (that the nut goes on) has started to turn a couple of mil left and right.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner, I didn't get any email notification to replies.

No haven't had a closer look yet as I've been working none stop on the rest of the bike for a while now.
I was thinking of changing the starter for a more modern type, as you mentioned.
I'll take a gander when I have time, maybe use parts from a Fiat starter that's knocking around under the bench somewhere.

Fitting a new brake disc tomorrow, will it ever end...
