Enfield gearbox orientation

Post by tappy »

What happens if I use an Enfield gearbox lying down? i.e. with the shafts on the same horizontal plane, and with the end cover pointing up or down rather than rearwards?
I can imagine oil leaks might be a problem, but with both sets of gears in the oil perhaps a lower oil level would be permissible?

Anyone done this?

Hi, I had my Enfield box laid backwards at about 45 degrees in my bike, I quickly moved it to the normal position as it did a good impression of the Amoco Cadiz.

The bolt holes for the gearbox plates is the main problem. Then if your going to tilt it 90 degrees you will have a problem with the gear selector that goes from the outer to the inner cases. Take a look at this Image

You would need other seals as well ie small main shaft (right hand) bearing (see webpage).
You will need the mod that I have on my bike now, it's 100% oil tight (LOL, it is now that I found the sprocket & nut were bouncing all over the place due to a broken tab washer). This is what got me mad with it at the rally this year, if only I knew all it needed was a spanner.

I can't remember if I put this on my website yet as it was a mod that was special to my bike, but, I used two seal washers each side of the sprocket tab washer, as there is absolutely nothing to stop a leak from this place. Really the tab washer needs a molded seal at both sides of it. Or an O ring cut in to the back of the sprocket nut and another in the face of the sprocket. You must also use sealed bearings and the very latest parts from India. Output shaft and seal etc.

Hope this helps

ps a good idea is; when you have your box sealed, lay it back on the work bench and pump a few psi of air pressure in to it and see where oil comes out, if at all. I wouldn't worry about the air pressure as when these boxes go at full chat there is a hell of an air pressure build up in there.
