Gearbox rebuild help :)

Post by alexanderfoti »

Hi all, I am currently putting my gearbox back together and am having some issues.

Its a villers 4 speed.

I have assembled the whole thing and its all gone well except I cant choose any gears.

I am using the following method for lining up the cam barrel and selector quadrant:

First gear method:
Turn the cam barrel so that the outer fork is flush with the end of the barrel, this engages first gear. Operate the gear lever so that the pawl is in engagement with the last tooth on the selector qauadrant (i assumed this means but the selector in first gear position IE all the way up) which should be to the rear. Push home the outer cover, until the teeth on the cam barrel touch those of the quadrant, now move the gear lever to the first gear position and the cover will go fully home as the teeth mesh (this park goes ok).

The problem is, that after I do this, I cant go down from the first gear position.

Now the reason I took the box apart was because I couldnt change gears other than 1st-2nd and back again. Im wondering if the selector mechanism was the cause of this problem rather than the broken high gear pinon.

I have dismantled the selector mechanism and this is what it looks like:

Now, do I send this gearbox to villiers services to get them to rebuild it, or do you think I will be okay with replacing the selector mechanisms bits ?
