Invert your engine?

Post by coachgeo »

Just to broaden your mind on possible configurations. Dry sump the engine and invert it. The block would make a great stress frame member?

It does open up a whole new world of candidate engines! In addition to dry sump it's often possible to tighten up clearances in a factory oil pump [normal gear-rotor type] to radically increase oil pressure.

Also possible to study a lubrication system and install restrictors in certain areas, to force high pressure oil to critical areas rather than just pumping 25-20 lbs to all areas. On our Chrysler racing engines such as LA series, LA318-LA340-LA360 smallblocks, it was common to install restrictors into block's oil galleries to better protect key components & increase oil pressure to select areas. For fast & tight road course, mountain races or even long sweeper turns it could be the difference between finishing in the numbers or having a blown engine on the side of the road! Also helps a bunch in drag racing during launch & gear change weight transfers.

These combined with dry sump are a sure winner. Some of our drag racing engines require dry sump because of the amazing mass of oil spinning around the crankshaft at up to 12,000 rpms. Baffling oil pan & crank scrapers are a help but dry sump is a guarantee.

Also see your thread in this section titled Dry Sump regarding my post on pre-oilers. These few things can at the very least DOUBLE engine life, that's DOUBLE!! Yeah buddy, I'm on it like a terrier on a rat!
