Hi all,
Still motoring happily on my Diahatsu Dnepr but notice that my brakes all but disappear in the wet and as wet seems the norm thesedays I am considering fitting a disc brake to the front end. I want to keep the look of the machine and have a disc from a yamaha seka that will fit really well if bolted to the original hub.A twin piston kawasaki caliper and mastercylinder will provide the stopping force. The only forseeable problem is the amount of metal the disc holding screws will have to bite into the drum, I calculate approx 8-10mm. Anyone have any ideas as to how to get a bit more anchorage. I have thought about pouring epoxy resin into the back of the drum and using long screws to get the mounting more secure. Is there any better substance I could use? Any input appreciated.

Hi John, I have read somewhere that either mini or moggy minor back plates fit ural/dnepr hubs and can be used to improve front brakes,(hydraulic shoe). I saw a dneper at the redstar rally last year with this set up and it looked quite trick, but even better it worked.

I PM'd you some details about my Ural-Morris 1000 hydraulic drum conversion. If I were thinking about the disk conversion you're describing, I think I'd turn a thick steel disk to 200mm OD, bore a big hole through the middle (~60 ID from memory) to clear the boss holding the wheel bearing, and then tack-weld it into the drum onto the steel liner. Not sure what heat would do to the adhesion between liner and hub. Your disk mounting bolts could then be tapped into this as well as the (alloy) back of the drum.
Arranging a hanger for the caliper on the dnepr fork slider will be a hassle - I guess it will have to clamp on around the leg...

That sounds like a good plan. The fork legs are steel so I would weld a caliper bracket to it.The Ural riders association website show how to do it but using a honda wheel but I would like to keep the original. Oops only noticed a seperate posting section for wheels and brakes Sorry Stuart!
