3rd topic in 12Hrs, fit bearing on axle

Hi,
When i place the engine in the middle, and install a taurus axle, do you think the PETROL inner primary is sturdy enough
to hold the strain of an supporting ball bearing wich is bolted on the outside with a housing(like pic)?
obvious is has to cope with the strain thats otherwise bending the shaft.
someone with a 406 engine told me he saw it bending at first start..

making an bearing house onto the frame is very difficult i think..

In the first place what was the reason you want
to move the engine ?

Secondly , if the extra bearing is not mounted on the
gearbox itself , I dont think it helps at all
any other place will have too much flex.
If the amount of flex is more than the bending of the
output shaft the gearbox bearing takes all force

Most conversions have-i am told- an extra bearing in the taurus inner case..
i want to place the engine in the middle so i can fit the original airfilter again, and it would be nice not to hold the bike off-set under you..
but i think i will repais my current subframe and improve it, and get more info about this idea.
So you (also) think the inner primary will flex(or break) too much?

In my opinion a bearing attached to the primairy case , does
not have any effect ,apart from adding extra weight and friction

Hmm clear!
But the longer shaft needs some support, doesn't it?

also i am looking (in due time) for a possibility to get a shaft that is not too long(so no spacer between engine and casing is needed..)

Never seen a RE gearbox from inside ( yet)
So I dont know if supporting the shaft
is essential.
But , if I am correct in assuming a bearing in the
primary case does not work , it probably
survives without.........

On my bike I have replaced the normal long shaft with the extra long shaft (two aftermarket shaft lengths), both shafts needed extra support as they flex like mad, left to run like that and it will not be long until the shaft snaps. In my opinion if you use a longer than usual shaft then you must use an extra bearing as close to the clutch as you can get it. The bearing must be exactly in line with the gearbox shaft, this shouldn’t be too difficult as the Enfield gearbox is static (does not move forward or backward for chain tensioning).
I have used a Harley bearing carrier, 4 bolts at each end that should ok to bolt to the back of your Enfield primary case, the only problem is it's an imperial measurement so you will need to take out the bearing and open up the bearing seat to take a metric bearing. I got mine for £17 off eBay.

The Enfield shaft may need a slight rub down with wet and dry paper if the bearing is a too much of a tight fit, don't be tempted to bang on a bearing as you will one day need to get it off. :)

okay.. So the strain taken by the bearings is transferred to the inner primary, which is of alu-alloy and quite thin!
(at least the original one) Also the strain is transferred to the engine side.. I hope it holds.. Let me/us knwo when it goes wrong..
Ideal would be a support from the bearing housing to the enfield frame..

A: Yes I guess so, use Loctite bearing seal to stop it spinning in it's alloy seat.

Let me/us know when it goes wrong.. Ha! Cheeky bugger :D

This is how I did mine. Note the steel plate bolted to the frame at the back and the engine at the front.

Very inventive.. ofcourse a sealed bearing in it..
i wish i was that smart..
maybe i should quit my home brewery..
