Hatz 1B50

Post by balboa_71 »

Well, its getting near time for look for my Hatz engine here in the states. Called and asked a local engine supplier to quote one of each: Hatz 1B40, Hatz 1B50, and Kubota OC95, all with electric start and 1" stub shaft. All I got back so far was $3,088 + shipping for the Kubota, and news that 1B50 is no longer in production.... I responded by asking them to go ahead and quote 1B40 anyways....

I have several engines.

Cris,

I have several engines, what are you looking for in HP, weight and RPM?

I'll help you find something, but I think the 3k price tag for the 1B40 Hatz, I could find you alot more motor.

eBay has a new Lombardini and Robin in the same size Hatz your looking at in the $1100-$1350 range as I type.

Dave,
I'm looking for an engine with the same foot print (or very close to) my 10hp Chinese clone. Hatz can be had for much less than I was quoted, but I really had my heart set on the 1B50. I'd like an engine with the dual injection (pre injection) to reduce clatter, or at least an engine designed to operate over the entire rpm range (1,400 to 3,600 rpm). Also, I'd like to stick with air cooling. Right now I'm limited to the space my frame will accept.

thanks,
Cris

I did some checking.

Cris,

I did some checking. From what I gather, the 1D50 is avalible? I don't know how it compairs to the 1B50.

Dave,
I believe it is, but very expensive. It was explained to me that these series were used a lot in unattended oil field work for mucho hours, etc.. I don't know if that's true, but I don't have much to go on. Looking at the build of the "D" version, its more sophisticated and comes with different balance options (50 or 100%) and I'm not sure what or why the option exists. It's hard for me to justify a 4 to 5K ($$$) engine in a $300 bike when I know that I can't get a good return on the investment. This is where the Changfa 10hp air cooled (same one used on a Chevy Metro, see Utterpower.com) sure looks attractive for the cost (around $700). On the other hand, there are folks out there running 10hp clones that are on this list (and the Yahoo groups) that are not reporting back on their experiences and I wonder why?? The other day, someone was selling the Punsun 20hp V twin on eBay, but engine location was in China  and shipping was listed at $99..... kinda make me wonder if a buyer in the states would ever see the engine he/she bought :(

Hi Cris

I've had no troubles with the Yanmar clone in my bike. I also have a gen set running the same type of engine. They seem pretty much well bullet proof if you don't do anything drastic with them.

One thing I have not done = an internet search lately to see if anyone has had problems with the engine when used in plant machinery etc.

Yeah I know the knock can be a pain, especially when cruising at low speed - which for me is not very often. At speed it seems to be quieter.

LPG completely stops the clang - but it's a bit hard to rig up a LPG system on a bike.

I always wondered if they may bring out a new cam "as everything runs on the same cam = valves and injection pump" and go pre injection to improve emissions further and stop the clang. I was reading somewhere that the engines are coming out of the factory certified for different country emission standards, most probable UN type standards.

It would be nice to see a larger displacement with pre injection become available. I know they have increased the capacity from 406 to 412cc's, so they may increase it further - only time will tell.

Cheers

Andrew,
Yes, the 418cc versions are available here in the states claiming them EPA certified, but for what, I don't know. Only thing I can state is my clone had been sitting in a container for years here in the states before being offered for sale on eBay. I agree, pre-injection would be the cats-ass, and that's one of the reasons I was looking at a Hatz engine, as it comes with that feature.
I think though, that some of the clones offer a throttle with variable engine rpm (idle, mid-range and WFO), I'm wondering if they have different specs???

Chris,

I've heard about two stage injection in the Hatz 1B engines but looking at the pdf of the 20,30 and 40 I don't see the two spring injector that is used to achieve this effect in DI engines. I guess the cam driving the inector pump could have a small bump before the main lift to provide a kind of two stage injection, but with a quick scan of the pdf I could not find a decent picture of the IP drive mechanism.

What do you know?

Darren,
I don't know anymore than you do about the Hatz 1B singles. They are reported to be the best engine used over in Europe that are being put in converted bikes. There is supposed to be a 1B50 coming out this year, but our local dealer says different......
