Ruggerini conversion info

Post by albertaphil »

Hi all, I just introduced myself on the Introductions board. Anyway, once I decided to start a build, a Ruggerini MD151 fell into my lap for $200. Now after reading through the archive here, I'm mostly convinced to a Comet CVT in (not as cool as one of manual builds I've seen here, but more suitable for my skill level and purposes). I'm thinking a Comet 94C with a 90D secondary pulley. Perhaps roverthetop can help with this question...I saw that his fluorescent green bike had a CVT. Will this combo fit into a Honda Nighthawk frame? Also, what exactly is the size of the crankshaft on my engine? I read an old thread regarding imperial vs. metric and the hassle it can cause. Of course, it sounds like there isn't really a standard taper any more, either. And one more thing...I would really love to have the CVT on the right side of the bike, just to have the oil filter and dipstick where it is easy to get at and put the voltage regulator on the back. Of course, this would have my engine running the opposite direction to my drive chain. Are there any brainwaves to reverse the direction of rotation of the jackshaft (or one of the jackshafts, depending on the solution) to drive my wheel? Thanks for all your help and experience.

Phil, welcome to the dark side of motorcycling.

I would caution about taking the drive from the flywheel side, most engine manufacturers state that only 1/3 of the power should be taken from this side.

Should you go ahead your going to need to reverse the rotation, A gear driven motorcycle gearbox from a 2 stroker may be what your looking for.

Cheers
Dave
