I am Vijay from India. I came to know about this site when I am searching for engine options for my Diesel bullet. My progress has been stopped for almost 8 months due to unavoidable circumstances. I am back to business now.
My Bull is a old 1964 model converted to diesel 10 years before. I purchased for $350 and people here are telling that its worth for $50

Yes nothing beats old iron. The stability is good though the front forks gone dud. After I purchase the bike I rode back to my home 450Kms non stop. The engine needs complete overhaul I decided to remove this engine and needed something powerful capable of running everyday to my work and touring.
Indian Customs law made it impossible to order an engine from outside. I am looking for options available here.
sub 1 tonner mini truck engines like Tata Ace(2 cylinders, 700cc, 16hp), Ape truk (482cc, 1 cyl, 12hp), Force M4 (600 cc, 1 cyl,14 hp, derived from OM616).
I feel Ape engine is not feasible due to integrated gear box, differential and half shafts. I only positive point is it can rev upto 12 hp @4500rpm perfect for motorcycle.
I agree, the old Enfields are a good solid mount, look after them and they will go for ages. The diesel engines clock up much more miles then any petrol engine can if maintenance is kept up to them, to bad your engine isn't all that healthy.
Would it be better to rebuild the engine you have? Wonder if some how you can get hold of a yanmar china clone 406 or 412 engine, as they go OK and seem reliable.
Keep us posted how you get on with the engine transplant.
I dont have plans to use the existing engine as it is very sluggish. It wont suit for touring. The picture below is the lombardini 482cc 12 Hp@ 4500 rpm 23 Nm@ 3200. Its fairly high speed i am interested in plonking to the bullet frame. Only problem its a integrated engine. I dont know how feasible to remove gearbox, differential, half shafts in this machine. Ideas and suggestions please
