new bike build help

Post by jwspin »

so ive got a couple different chassis, xt 600 enduro, and a gs 750l and a pair of lister single cyl engines. i would like to build the xt bike first and do it simple with a centrifigal clutch and the details of the gs will come pretty soon.

the advice i need as about the simple build. i have read a bit about the cvt and comet clutches but its seems like most threads are just debating the best setups.
what setups are people running that work and are driven often? just keepin it simple on this one and getting her rolling.

thanks

where are you located? i'm outside of portland, oregon US. i've built 3, working on 5 (2 at once). would be happy to help. email me at roverthetop@earthlink.net. the transmission is a question only you can answer. what's the terrain? driving conditions? driving habits? speed requirement?
what engine is going in it? how much room? can you bend tubing? weld?
i'm currently designing an enduro build for a mate. he doesnt need a ton of speed for freeway, and wants to go fairly inexpensive. 10hp, cvt, should do him fine. minimal frame mods with the smaller engine. quoted him $4500 less donor and paint for a straight biodiesel bike. (NEW engine, NEW cvt)
i think you'll have difficulties with the lister singles in a bike. not much power and a lot of space required (if i remember the listers).

the lister im getting is supposed to look like the yanmars and it is around 12 hp so i think it should work either way im looking around at all the mower shops for a kubota 3 cyl for the GS. i found one that needs new rings but im hoping to find a runner soon and a basket case tranny. i think im just gonna go with the cvt style on the enduro and do it cheap. ive got a lot of snowmobile resources around so i may try to go that route for now cause its free.

what about jackshafts? are most people just using the generic go kart ones?

thanls again

i'm not so familiar with the listers, but i still think your frame mods for it will be the challenge, especially in an enduro style. the cvt i use is the comet 94c duster. its torque ratings are higher, so you may want to call Don Jackson at comet to discuss. he's a wealth of information and willing to help. the jackshaft i would use on a 12 hp would be at least 3/4". i use 1" myself.

Lister engine

Post by stormcoat »

Is your engine a Lister or a "Lister Petter"? What model is it? Lister Petter singles come in a variety of sizes, some of which would never fit into a normal bike frame. I am guessing that you have one of the "mini" series, possibly AD1. These come with a convenient bell housing, upon which, with some machining of the flywheel, a BMW, Ural or Dnepr clutch can be grafted on and an adaptor plate made to fit the gearbox. However, this arrangement would only suit a shaft drive layout.
These engines come with one small advantage: there is a power output at either end. Mine is a Lister Petter AD2 whereupon the Dnepr gearbox is connected by means of a 12mm aluminium plate, drilled to fit both box and engine bell housing. On the timing side, there is a PTO shaft, for the alternator, which has yet to be finalised. However, due to the less than compact nature of the engine design, the Dnepr frame has been extended by some 17 inches and widened by almost 5 inches. The square box sections that I have inserted in place of the original tubular bottom rails, have been "sculpted" to fit around the lubricating oil filler and again around the fan housing.

Lister/Petter power output is, on paper, is slightly less frantic than that of Chinese Yanmar clones, but they have more lasting potential. If you are successful in uniting your engines and frames, be prepared for a ride which could be said to compare with smoking a large pipeful of "St Bruno" tobacco whilst watching a village cricket match on a very hot day!

You may be compensated, however, should you be prepared to spend some time with the metal polish. You will not such a gleam from anything else!

im not sure what motor it is yet because my buddy hasnt brought them down yet. if its too big then ill stick it in something else. im pretty sure it is a lister petter and he said it was small enough to cram in a bike. the cool thing about my enduro bike is it was engine frame style so there isnt much i have to cut out of the way. it should fit fine one way or another.

thanks so far hopefully ill have the motors soon and be able to start the build.
