New Build- Hatz E79 Questions

Post by smokyjoe »

Hi,

I had the yearning for building a Diesel bike about 15 years ago, and at the time I bought a dead Suzuki GS550L and it has been sitting gathering dust in the back of the shed ever since. At the time I was going to use a small Kubota 3 cyl. but the engine cost was prohibitive. With the high fuel prices and Crazy Jerry's Changzuki as inspiration the project lives again! I just bought a Hatz E79 in very good condition on Saturday at an antique engine show. Having no manual on this engine I have a few questions that I was not able to answer in searching the web:

1) How the heck do you start this thing? It has a rather complex decompression mechanism that I can't figure out (yet!)

2) I have seen power ratings for this engine from 7 to 9 HP, what is it really and I guess that this rating is rather conservative? It displaces 422cc I think, but if it is only 7HP and the Changfa is 406cc and 10 HP why does the Changfa produce this much more power or is it overrated?

3) What is the max governed speed of the Hatz E79, and where on the RPM band is the peak horsepower and torque produced?

I am undecided whether to use a belt-drive Comet type CVT or to hack apart the Suzuki 6 speed box from the seized motor and use that (I'm a machinist and have a small shop). I think it is a fairly close ratio transmission, and another benefit of this route would be use of the Suzuki electric start. I don't have much money to put into this machine so new CVTs are out of my price range, presently I am looking for a used one to experiment with. Any comments?

Thanks for your input. I hope to eventually run the bike on waste vegetable oil using the exhaust to heat water to warm the oil.

Welcome Smokyjoe,

You may find a bit of information helpful in the link beloow, at least with respect to starting. With regard to the Suzuki transmission I would wonder where the oil pump is located. Most of those trans were oil fed from the pump in the engine which may be lost if you amputate the engine. Which is why most often you see someone sever the trans from a 2 cycle. In any event, keep up posted on your progress. And if interested, let us know where you're located in case anyone nearby can be of help.

I also just picked up a Hatz E79, let me know if you find a manual, sometimes they can be found on eBay.

Good luck,
Dave

Thanks for the help, at least I know what that plunger thingy is, although it is rusted stuck. I guess they didn't use it much! I am going to bolt it down to a heavy steel plate workbench I have outside my garage this weekend and give it a crank or two. Now that I look at it it looks fairly straight forward.

I'm in the Western part of Massachusetts in the good ol' USA. If I find an operator's manual I'll let you know. I would like to add a glow plug, it looks to have a fine threaded screw in plug in the head where a glow plug might go.

Another Hatz E79 question.............

Post by smokyjoe »

Hoping to get working with this thing again this weekend, along with starting to gut the Suzuki.

The tractor? site post on the Hatz was very helpful, but still one nagging question...

Question is, how does one stop the E79 once it gets started? I am going to guess that the excess fuel (starting) plunger is up for excess fuel, middle for run and down for stop? My plunger is still rusted stuck in the middle? position (I hope it is rust keeping it from moving!) I've got it soaking with penetrating oil so it should be loose by the weekend.

Have fun
