VLA is introduced to a Diesel motorcycle

Post by LocomotiveBreath »

Just want to say hello all. I've ventured out to Texas to see my son in the Military. Brought my Diesel bike and been riding all over, over 8,000 miles to date. The Centrifugal clutch works great, but eventually will be replaced with a more traditional transmission.

While re-living my youth and seeing old school mates in Flagstaff, AZ, where I grew up and when to High School. I went up to Lowell Observatory, http://www.lowell.edu/ , to think about my dear friend, Robert Burnham. http://rbjm.org/ I made and ate a sandwich at the old cabin where he showed me how to polish mirrors for reflector telescopes, I was only 13 back then. Bob was an astronomer there and wrote the Burnham's Celestial Handbook, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Burnham,_Jr. I helped him in the late 60's to put Volume #1 & 2 together because they were loose leaf back then. At 13, he let me have free run of the observatory, and gave me a deep appreciation of the Universe, possibly the largest perpetual motion machine in existence! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perpetual_motion

While riding out by old Route 66 near Winona, http://www.theroadwanderer.net/RT66flagstaff.htm , I'll mention I was thinking when they filmed Two Lame Black Top, http://groups.msn.com/twolaneblacktopho ... affaz.msnw , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKcIGPQST9s I met James Taylor, Dennis Wilson, and others in the cast, but was more interested in the three 55 Chevy’s, two of which were used in American Graffiti. http://kathyschrock.net/graffiti/55.htm and, my frame cracked, but ran into an old high school class mate that owns a very well run welding and fabrication shop. See: http://www.processregister.com/Mayorga_ ... d32460.htm Well $45 and my frame was re-welded and gusseted back together.

When I was at Franks shop, I noticed a new Diesel bike being built by Rodney Rucker. I'll post pictures later after it is introduced by Rodney, I asked Rodney while visiting him at his Winslow Arizona home when I can post them, hang on to your hats folks! Some of his work is owned by Jay Leno, also Rodney is one of the Blastoline Brothers. See: http://www.lowesmotorspeedway.com/news_ ... 29536.html

Rodney’s from Barstow, and we have many mutual friends and my sisters know him and Rodney's co-workers, and I've always want to talk with him about some of my ideas. So off to his house I went, what a neat guy and Rodney was very impressed with my bike and future meetings are scheduled. See some of his work, and I'm honored to have impressed him. But time being tight, we had to cut our meeting short after a couple of hours. I think a big Bio-Diesel Tank motored car might be in the works after we talked.

One of Rodney’s Cars is in the Guinness Book of World records. Guess his V-12 Packard PT boat engined car is kind of on the really big side.

Well after our visit, I headed to Texas to see Dustin, my son, yes I'm a proud Dad. ImageHe is a firefighter and a Sky-Pilot. Remember, Eric Burdon? Yes, he rode my bike back in Dec. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gL3HTlfW0A

Well going through New Mexico, I rode my bike out to the VLA. http://www.vla.nrao.edu/ I always enjoyed Carl Sagan, loved the movie contact. http://www.imdb.com/media/rm384602624/tt0118884 and for those that havent seen this, it's worth a look, as we are all part of the picture! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcBV-cXVWFw
Well the VLA crew that was there, really liked my bike, some even took test rides. The VLA crew gave me an "E" ticket tour of the facility, so I thought I post a few pictures.

Hope all are doing as well as I am,
Dave, life is good, and from my view, I have been very blessed!

Hi Dave

Hay great to see you've swung the leg over the ole diesel and done some cruisin' - liked reading the post, you've done something that many have dreamed of. :)

Road trips are fun, and your post brings merit to that. ;)

Dave, sounds like you are having an excellent time on that bike of yours :D Wish we had your weather :!: They've got me travelling alot recently here for work and the only good thing they did was give me a common rail diesel car to do it in. Driving these modern diesel's is so pleasurable that they've just gotta stick one in a bike at some stage. Roll on acceleration is great.
Bloody awesome trike that guy built with a V12 in. Look forward to seeing that Diesel bike they're workin on one day  Great post, mate :!:
