Build tips

Post by johnfireball »

Hi all,
I,m new to this forum and am about to embark on a diesel build. I got my hands on an engine its an old engine but little used 650cc aircooled single with rope start. It has a bellhousing so would be suitable for either a Dnepr or perhaps a Bmw frame. I have a guy in belgium currently trying to source me a Dnepr chassis. The engine starts easily with the rope so I hope it will start ok on the kickstart, anyone any experience? The motor has a built in ac genny which should keep the battery charged ok. it was made in switzerland by M.A.G and appears really robust I would estimate approx 12hp and max rpm 3000. Now the questions: This engine is some thumper so should it be rubber mounted? Will the Dnepr gearing suit or is the bmw a better option? Any other hints greatly appreciated.

John,

I have limited experience in this field having just finished a build and got it through an MOT ( UK basic roadworthy certificate) but heres a few thoughts to help get you started.
Kick started has been discused if you take a look through the topics but if i recall correctly it is achievable providing you utilise the full throw of the mechanism, they seem to fire on the very last part of the action.
Getting the engine to spin to 3600rpm would be a great advantage. In top gear that last 600rpm makes a significant difference to top speed. Try looking at Yahoo Diesel bike group. There is an xcell spreadsheet there where you can put in your gear ratios, wheel diameters, rpm etc and get theoretical top speeds, it may help you decide gear box choice.
Vibration is a problem on these kind of builds both for rider comfort and machine durability. In theory rubber mounting sounds an ideal solution however you may then need to give consideration to rubber mounting the entire drive train and therefore encounter a whole host of other problems.
Your solution will depend upon your time, skills, equipment etc. Whatever you do make sure the engine is adequatly braced.

Good luck and keep us posted with progress.
