Since that engine was used in a variety of cars (VW , Citroen and Peugot to name a few) it should not be that hard to source one ! I am about to trade an "N" reg Golf with one for an "S" reg Peugot with the same engine and am getting £150 for the VW in trade !
Yes , the dispatch/expert and possibly the scudo share the XUD as you say. I would think that a few Seats, and the odd Skoda may share the tdi engine, but i would expect to pay a bit more than a XUD!
When the dual mass flywheel self-destructed on my VW T5 van(1.9TDI), my nephew (then a Ford mechanic) was familiar with this engine type, as
Ford used the same engine in the Ford Galaxy (mpv?), and possibly in other Ford models too. Mouse, Good luck with your search

Skoda Felicia diesel is VW1.9, but no turbo. Still, nice and simple, no electrics, and very very cheap at the moment as the last of these (like mine) slowly approach a rusty death! I'm still vainly patching mine back together or you could have it.
an AAZ engine out of an early mk3 golf is a good choice as there a mechanical fuel pump so should be hardley any wiring and fuel and boost can be turned up to make 100bhp quite easly. A 1.6gtd or 1.6td out of a mk2 golf is also a good choice as they have a slightly shorter stroke so rev a bit higher. the gtd is tunable to over 100bhp too
