Injector line heater

Post by alexanderfoti »

As most of you know, I run my Xj600 diesel bike purely on WVO (Waste Veg oil). I mix it with 5% Petrol, but during the winter its still very hard to start. This is mainly down to the thickness of the vegetable oil at low temperatures.

To counteract this, I have installed an injector line heater. I used Kapton tape and nichrome heating wire. Kapton tape  a thermal limit of about 250 degrees C and is very thin so aids heat transfer better. I wrapped 2 sections of nichrome wire after wrapping the injector line in kapton tape. Each coil draws around 4 amps.

The temperature aim is around 75 degrees c, to measure how long I would have to run the coils for, I crimped one end of a copper pipe and wrapped it with kapton tape, then the heating coils. I filled it with WVO and inserted a temperature probe. It took approximately 1 minute and 50 seconds to reach 80 degrees C.

As a result, I have coupled the heating elements with a 12v timer circuit and a relay. The timer is energised when the key is turned to on. The timer is set for aproximately 1 minute 45 seconds. The output of the relay also triggers the oil pressure light on the dashboard so I can see when the coils are energised, when the light goes out I can start the engine.

With pre-heating, the engine now starts within 3 cranks rather than 10-15 as before. Even at 0 degrees c.

good post.

Have you considered a water or water/alcohol injection to use to clean the engine out occasionally since your running on WVO in an engine tuned for combustion of a different fuel. WVO blends are close.... but they still don't combust at same time etc. of diesel so some cleaning is good thing to do just in case.

Great minds think alike! Been fitted for about 500 miles now. Actuated on full throttle. I use mainly washer fluid as it has high methanol content

I did try using an old carburetor with the slide removed and the main jet soldered over, so it just used the idle circuit and could be tuned by using the idle mix screw.

It did cause some confusion at a local bike show having a diesel with a carb attached to the intake.

Err can you explain why your tax disc says 206cc??
I thought these engines were 406 cc (or more)??
If that is the case it should be £57 over 400cc how much will it cost to stop me writing to the DVLA and reporting you for cheating them out of £20?? :D

Never been stopped :p.

They messed up the paperwork about 10 times, and this was the lowest amoutn of mistakes I settled on, ill sort it when tax expires, otherwise its another 3 months that the bike is off the road.

Seriously though be careful as you could be guilty of fraud and in the case of an accident your insurance could be void. :(
