Engine for 64 sporty in US

New to this but want to place a Diesel engine in my 64 sporty. Any ideas of donors or where to start looking? Thanks to all who wish to help me with their expertise.

Twin cyclinder air cooled or even better yet coolant cooled diesel engine. There are threads in this forum to view to hint at what twin air cools to consider. The kubota twin or even triple would be real sweet option too as well as some others.

BTW there is a bike shop North of Dallas that is building two Diesel Triumph Tigers (steamers) One is his. One is mine. He's got a custom shop. Mine is getting a D722 Kubota and his is getting a Briggs/Diahatsu Triple. He does mostly private word of mouth stuff cause he is slammed with work. He's not a Harley shop though. Mostly Dual Sport/ Big adventure bikes of Ducati Kawi, Yammi, BMW and the likes. He's got a diesel KLR also. So yeah he likes anything diesel.......... evan a Harley lol. he's looking for some harley clutch stuff for his Tiger. It's getting a Ultima 6 speed where mines getting a CVT.

The aircooled Hatz 2G40, Ruggerini RD211 and Lombardini 12LD475 are all relatively lightweight and very economical when geared correctly.
They're fairly wide, so you might need some kind of shaft extension if you're using the original gearbox.
They're also quite tall with a very square sump so you need about 21" vertical height in the frame, up to 8" back from where the bottom frame tubes become straight.

if you're using the original gearbox
Amputating the gearbox has been done on the Sportster. Would make for a great gearbox if you've got it available. If you're going with an east-west orientation of the engine, even a 2 cylinder when centered in the frame, will make for a misalignment of the drive and driven pulleys. That said, it would appear the Sporty trans can tolerate a good deal of overhang on the pulley given the extreme belt drives found these days.

Sportster frame isn't ideal for a conversion. The double tubes under the engine are too narrow to accommodate the pan/sump dropping through and will thus require some major mods. But very doable. We work with what we have to work with. Life's a compromise. Go for it.

You'll quickly learn the larger Ruggerinis, Lombardinis and Hatzs are scarce as hen's teeth this side of the pond. Don't rule out other options such as the Kubota (personal bias) as you have 3 dealers in the DFW area. The D902 (898cc) would put you right in the vicinity of the original 883cc sporty engine. If you haven't been there already, the link below has a number of 3 cylinder diesels driving Harley boxes.

All of which are hard to find in the US and finding parts is just as hard.
