Hey guys - just started gathering up the bits for my build. After a load of research I've decided to use a Harley gearbox and smart CDI engine. I'd thought about this combination before, but then stumbled across the EDIMO on the site and saw for sure that it can be done. So this is what I am aiming at although mine will run a chain primary and will have a trailbike style frame (may have to be custom made - not sure yet).
I've an eye on an engine for it which comes with a load of stuff like wiring loom (and gearbox!) but does not come with the ECU unfortunately. I have examined the wiring diagrams for this engine and think I understand most of it although was wondering if anyone knows if the ECU talks to the clocks / ABS / etc to verify that nothing is out of the ordinary before allowing the engine to start? Bit of a longshot maybe - I guess you'd need to know your stuff about these engines, although i remember someone on here a while ago had used them?
Keep up the good work.
Neil

I believe a CD-ROM shop manual is available for the Smart. The manual should contain electrical diagrams and diagnostic info. I would locate all the unnecessary ECU inputs e.g. ABS and put a resistor or other dummy load of the appropriate value in place of the sensor to trick the ECU into thinking the sensor is attached.
Another idea - perhaps one of the other folks who has installed a Smart can offer some sugestions. as to how they dealt with this problem

Cheers for that avery. I have the manual which has some useful info in it. Its got wiring diagrams etc. What I can't work out is if it needs to talk to the other control modules or if it would be just fine without them (abs is a separate module connected via a data cable). Does Erik still hang about these boards? Failing that I was maybe gonna talk to these guys -

I know I am replying to myself but though you might be interested. I got in contact with the prof who runs the EDIMO project and he sent me just the info I was looking for (nice guy).
Basically the standard ECU needs to talk to the other modules or it goes into limp home mode (max revs 3000 etc). So I've emailed another company that makes ECU's for this engine (which look cool because you can tweak injection settings etc). I just hope they will sell in low quantities...
