It's a Gusher

Post by DieselFly »

Well, I finally got my bike out on the road for the first bike test run. This was after a half hour of running on the work stand and running it around the parking lot a bunch. The result- FAIL . I started off. All was good. When I went to speed up to 50mph, the belt started slipping. I looked down to see everything- including the inside of my pant legs- covered with oil. U turn back to the shop. Pumped close to a quart of oil in less than 1 1/2 miles. All the oil was gushing out the crankcase vent. We cleaned it down and after school I took it for another test ride. 25mph in the school zone. Okay. Where the speed increases to 40 MPH up a hill, you hear the turbo spool and it started blowing oil again. So back to the shop- more degreaser, another power wash, more head scratching  . I took the PVC vent tube that used to go to the intake at the air filter and put a K&N filter on it. Good thing, because I might have wound up with a run away engine . Turns out there are three PVC valves on these V twins. Like the single Yanclones they are built into the rocker covers and there is a small 3.5mm passage drilled into the head to the intake port. I never looked to see if they were there on my engine but they are. The valves are just staked into the rocker box cover and one was loose in the bore. The long and the short is the valves were forced shut by the boost pressure and will and leak enough to allow boost pressure past them pressurizing the crank case. The one loose valve was very easy to blow through the wrong way which overwhelmed the single vent that remained open (GUSHER!). I tapped the passages in the head to 1/4 20 NC and ran some grub screws with sealant on them into the passage to the intake. Next I drilled the passage plugs out of the rocker cover and tapped them to 1/8"npt. I purchased some 5/16I.D barbed fittings from the Home Depot motorcycle aisle. This is where the story ends till Monday. I'm on the hunt for a tee and some line to hook the vents together. I will run the bike with the vents open. If the don't piss oil everywhere I will put the into the airfilter intake tube before the turbo. Rain is forecast for most of next week so I will put it back together and try and pull a test run between raindrops (no front fender). I will upload pictures into my build thread of the mods when I'm done. Fingers crossed this will fix it. The good news is it has turbo whistle and makes boost

Ahh yes! Looks great!

Not much info on here about people turboing the China diesels so Its good to hear about this one.

I intend on getting a supercharger up and running with mine as soon as its finished and tested in its current form!

Indeed! I had completely overlooked it as well.

do you know if the 406cc single cylinders are vented into the intake, I cant see any form of this on mine, but as I plan to supercharge it, it would be pertinent to find out.

All fixed. Pull the rocker covers. Tapped the holes in the cylinder heads leading to the intake manifold 1/4x20 fit without drilling. Wound two grub screws with sealent into the holes. Drille the plugs out on the top of the rocker covers and tapped to 1/8"npt. installed two 5/16" barbed fittings tie together with a tee. I tie wrapped the hose overboard for the test run all that came out was a little water. I then drilled a hole into the air filter mount and stuck the hose on it. Rode the bike around close to work for 20km or so. After dinner I came back to work and rode it 30km home. Traded seats half way with a friend of mine as the roads were wet we both got soked pants  . It easely pulls to 70mph. and yes the Yanclones have the PVC in the rocker cover. There is a video on Youtube showing this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aE_ftgNpOV4. I will update my build thread with pictures and get around to another video soon

the 406/418 cc are vented only to the intake with no external vent.

dieselfly, you got away lucky, i had to make an oil seperator for mine, i did get it to work, but i am pushing the unit alot harder and the more boost the more leakage.
I'll do what i feel.

Love the video! very easy for somebody like me to understand! luckily I found out about this, as I think I would have had a runaway engine on my hands otherwise! :) many thanks.

You would probably not have a runaway more likely to blow the crank seals out of it
