Volkswagen 1.6L ?

Post by XLerate »

Hi gents,

I tried to search forum for any VW 1.6l builds, tranverse mounted [crossways] but 'Search' said it "...ignored the following words because they are too common > VW 1.6l"

I'm considering the all mechanical pumped VW engine because I can get one pretty cheap, and we like cheap, plus I hear they are pretty stout.

So, anybody know of builds using the VW inline 1.6l or similar, tranverse mount, maybe with chain drive, not shaft drive?

Thanks!

There are several builds.

Russels gerarless rat is a 1.9l
The 1.6l was also used as an alternative powerplant in a CBR 1000 F and a GPZ 1000 RX.

And, of course, it's 1.6l VW in Stephanes Dieselross

Hi,
Check out the build thread for my 1900. Its done about 13000 miles in about 7 months including two trips into Europe and up around Scotland. The only real problem is the wonky lever arrangement I use for the clutch causing the bearing I've used to occasionally fail.
Averages about 85mpg (uk) but obviously drops at higher speeds so anything between about 70 and 100 mpg depending on how much of a hurry I'm in.

I'll be rebuilding the clutch actuation over the winter if I get the chance.
Kubota Z482 which is plodding on with unnerving reliability. Three years so far.
1900 Diesel Bike being rebuilt with better clutch control.

Thanks, Mouse! I'll ckeck out your build. Thinking of the VW engine I start to have doubts that the Suzi GS550 gearbox could handle the torque...
