I've been horrified by the recent hike in prices for airhead BMW bits!

So now thinking about using Ural/Cossack/Dniepr parts instead.....

So the questions is...which ones are best?

I've heard you should watch out for porus castings etc with that stuff :?

And remember that the Dnepr gearbox has a different number of layshafts compared to the BMW. ie the output spins in the other direction as does the shaft of the bevel drive. So make sure you use them as a pair or you'll be building the worlds first backwards diesel bike.

the final drive gear is outboard of the pinion?????

Yes!!!
I think it may have been something to do with attaching a differential and driven sidecar wheel.

I currently run a Ural gear-up and find that some stuff is a little crap i.e it rusts big time. The rest of the stuff seems to be quite well made especially if you put it up against some of the Brit stuff and I for one wouldn't hesitate when the time comes to convert 'Colin the Cossack' to diesel. Don't forget the most used diesel conversion is currently the Royal Enfield. :D

@ rednorfolk..... rust isn't an issue.....I'm from a ratbike background..... however price is!

I've driven several Urals, and own two different Ural gear boxes, while there are adjustments that can be made to the box and how it shifts, in both cases, I had trouble with 3rd gear slipping out of engagement. That was 15 years ago, so maybe things have improved. The boxes are light and look easy to work out, getting parts might be another thing all together. Anything with "BMW" here in the states is going to cost an arm and leg. I have a friend with a 9 year old oil-head beemer and his is in need of final drive parts at 85K miles :oops: Hopefully it's just worn bearings....

I have seen several Dieselbike's with an Dnepr-gearbox, I am building one with a Dnepr-gearbox. 4the gear 1:1, but I know a machineshop who made them with overdrive for very reasonable money.
I have had an Dnepr years ago, always problems, only the gearbox was works fine al the time.
I expect no problems when using not to much torque and power.
