I'm resurecting my Diesel Dnepr, my old transmission had 4th gear reversed giving me a final ratio out of the box @ 1:1.13 vs. the stock 1:1.31. I would like to have the same ratio in my new gearbox/transmission. Could anyone point me to a link or instructions to do this modification?
Thanks
Dave

Re: Dnepr Gearbox Trasmission 4th gear swap?
Hi -
I'm not sure on Dnepr boxes - but I've bought components from 'Oltimer Garage' in Poland (mail order) for Ural boxes, including non-standard 1:1 4th gear pairs, and he's been very reliable. From memory he has non-standard D-bits too - web-shop is comprehensive, with pictures - but pics might not give you enough detail as to whether it is possible to modify standard parts to match (or even whether this is what he's selling - though I guess ratios will give you a clue). Costs are probably a bit high - so if a modification if possible to your existing parts, perhaps that might be better.
You could try emailing Peter Ballard of the UK 'Cossack Club' - they have a website - as he's often a good source of technical info, and has been messing with Russian bikes for a long time.
I find my 1:1 4th in Ural-Daihatsu goes in with a hell of a clunk, since I guess there's a big gap between 3rd and 4th. My FD is also 3.2:1, which involves the largest pinion you can fit into final drive case (with lots of milling/filing). Did your earlier mod drive OK?
cheers

Re: Dnepr Gearbox Trasmission 4th gear swap?
I just picked up a set of gears from a friend that has some old Dnepr stock while he was in the business. A taller 3rd gear set(18/28) and a 22/24 4th gear set for $100 delivered from New Mexico. I've seen the gears on oldtimer garage and will be doing further business with them in the future. I did buy a 10/32 gear set but never installed them in my old solo set up, later sold. I did find a ebay seller selling Dnepr solo final drives with preintalled 10/35 gears. http://tinyurl.com/luqtx5
I now have a MT-16 drive witch will limit me with the 8/33? final drive. I'll looking at close to 65mph @ 3600-3800 rpm range. I'll be happy with a nice running 50-55mph speed.

Re: Dnepr Gearbox Trasmission 4th gear swap?
Hi,
From experience I would not use the 10:35 drive as the gears are not strong enough to take the power. I fitted a set to my diahatsu dnepr and stripped teeth within 100 miles.I rang F2 motorcycles and they told me they no longer sell this gear set as so many had the same problem. I fitted the more expensive 10:32 set from oldtimer garage and have had no further problems, they are much stronger due to the different cut of the teeth. You get what you pay for.
John.

Re: Dnepr Gearbox Trasmission 4th gear swap?
Hi all -
Resurrecting an old thread...I've acquired some Dnepr gearbox bits, and am thinking about building up a box to replace the Ural one I'm currently using. The main problem with the Ural box is the huge gap between 3rd (1.7:1) and top (was 1.3:1 - now 1:1).
Looking at the Dnepr box, it looks possible to use the existing 4th (1.3:1) as a third, and to buy a new 1:1 4th set from Oldtimer in ) Poland. Some heavy grinding on the clutch shaft old 4th (now third) would be needed, since it is a different shape than the 3rd it replaces, and has to 'peg' endwise into the new 4th. I'm thinking a crappy fit could be redeemed with some judicious welding...
Anyone know if this has been attempted before?
cheers
