Got a new engine coming....

Post by balboa_71 »

Well, I found a new engine for my GS850. Bought a "new in the box" Kubota OC95-E3 from a business in Tennessee. Guess one of the owners picked it up at an estate sale and had it sitting around for a few years. In the pic's I saw, it looks a little dusty, but unused. Hopefully I'll have it here sometime by the end of next week. Don't know much about these engines, but Kubota claims they are both air and oil cooled (always thought that air cooled engines with a sump were oil cooled as well....). If any of you know about these engines, good or bad, please post what you know, thanks. I'll be using my Comet 500 system with it, like my old Kama clone motor. After doing the swap, I'll replace the crankshaft in my Kama with one of the straight 1"Ø shafts available on eBay; then I'll have a spare engine 8)

I'll post some pics of the OC95 after receiving it.

Well I didn't get any good vib's from you all, but that's okay  So I'll post what's going on with my new engine so I can feel good about myself
Anyways, my engine purchase was on eBay, and the "buy it now" deal was for a "New" engine with "original packaging" etc.. So I paid the price plus shipping and now I have a used engine that doesn't run.
I took it to the local Kubota engine dealer with my check book to see if they could get the injection pump to do it's thing, as that was the only thing I could not figure out. They said they would check it out completely and give me a call with the damage report. Dude I talked to told me most diesels they work on with non working pumps is okay cause they have stuck plungers, rather the bummer is a pump that loses it's pressure....that's a bummer  My engines pump doesn't do a damn thing, so I'm hoping it's just stuck.
Anyways, I was curious as to the difference between a Kubota and Yanmar L100 clone, so here is what I've seen so far: engine controls on the OC95 are massive....no thin light gage sheet metal like on my Kama clone... Starter motor has a massive solenoid mounted to the top of the starter ($$$$), so God help me if the starter fails  Engine compression release is different, not the locking type I'm used to. Kubota has an oil cooler mounted to the top of the cylinder head....gotta love those external rubber oil lines! All kinds of spiffy wiring...to and from the starter, voltage rectum finder, starter switch and glow plug. Speaking of glow plugs....the Kubota is "indirect injection", not DI like the clones....has a triple wizzbang swirl chamber thingy that promises to make the world a better place... I don't like indirect injection if it means having to use the damn glow plug everytime you want to start the damn engine.....all that does is phuck up the battery. If the glow plug has to be used, then I'm going to have to get one of those 50 lb. batteries and put it on a damn trailer to pull behind me.... The injection pump is much larger than the clone. The machined surfaces where the pump mates to the block (and yes, I do know there are shims used between the pump and block for timing reasons) are almost a mirror finish.....much flatter than my ass while I'm sitting here typing all this bullshit. It just seems like everything it build with "big/heavy" applied.

I think you'll be better off with a Kubota engine rather than a clone. Some have had problems with clones in the past and once yours is up and running it should prove to be a better foundation on which to build a bike :D

Cris, I didn't respond to this topic because indeed it could be construed as "negative". I have already commented in another thread about this, and the reason I'm writing this post is to make sure you post some piccies of the conversion :D

I'm into bigger engines but always like to see build photos just to see how its done by other folks. From a personal point of view I'm lazy and posting photos often motivates me unto something so I can do an update.

Also what is a 'voltage rectum finder' ? :?

Guys,
Thanks for the reply's. I'll post pic's after I get the Kubota installed and running... In fact when I replace the crank in my clone engine, I'll do a photo essay of the crank install.

Mouse, I was referring to a voltage rectifier/regulator... When I worked at our local BSA shop back in 1976, I picked up some "colorful" nicknames/expressions for various parts of motorcycles and other things.

Well today I took my Kubota powered diesel bike out on it's madden voyage :D After spending a month in the shop to have the injector pump replaced, and paying $410 for the pump and labor, I can honestly say it was worth the effort. Engine runs super quiet with only noise coming from ringing torque converter drive unit... the bell shape amplifies any noise transmitted thru the crankshaft, aside from that, the engine sounds more like a gas powered unit. There is no smoke and no fumes, instead, just smooth power like I was getting from my Kama clone engine. Throttle spring is tougher to over power, but I'll get used to that or go with a longer lever. I have to add another cable in order to easily shut the engine down, but that can wait a few days. It will be interesting to see what sort of mileage I get from this engine as it is designed to minimize fuel usage. I think I'll put my fish tail straight thru exhaust back on the bike and get rid of the horribly heavy Enfield 500 exhaust on it now....very quiet, but weights a ton.
