Hello to diesel bikers everywhere --

My name is Tom, I live in Northern New York State, and I've been lurking here for a while. I don't have a diesel bike yet, but I'd sure like to build one.

I am a big fan of diesel engines, and have done two engine swaps in the four wheel world. Several years ago I put a Canadian market Toyota 3B diesel into my gas LandCruiser. More recently, I converted my old Porsche 356 to diesel using a VW 1.6 turbo engine for power. I recently completed a 30 day, 8600 mile coast to coast trip in that car, and it was great fun. Here's a picture of me and the car in Texas on that trip:

I'm not sure yet just what I want to build, I have a 10hp Yamaclone, and may use that to build a diesel dual sport. OTOH, I've always wanted a side hack, and if I decide to go that way I think I'll need a bigger engine!

Swveeet Porsch conversion. Great choice the 1.9L in it. Did you use parts of a dieselization kit for the Vanagon?

Thanks, but my engine is the old IDI 1.6L lump, not the newer 1.9, though it does have the VNT 15 turbo from a newer TDI.

That sign is way out west in Van Horn TX, it's kind of famous, and mentioned in Cormac McCarthy's "No Country for Old Men".

Welcome Tom I reckon you should at least consider a twin cyclinder engine - it may take quite a while to cover distances on those roads on a single. Ruggerini MD191 is the engine I and a few others like. 19hp 850 twin with 180 degree crank to reduce and vibes. I think they are badged up under other names to and also come with in 360 configs. Those should be avoided! lol
