Enfield + Yanmar 10HP + vibes

Post by snoopy »

I have an Enfield that has been converted with a 10HP Yanmar clone. Having rode a DRZ400 without handlebar weights on the end through France and nearly chopping my hands off with the pain, but what can I expect from the Diesel?

Can anybody shed some light via real experience? At the moment it has Renthal bars and no weights on the end.

Having ridden an Enfield fitted with a 350cc Hatz diesel I can honestly say I only ever experienced bad handlebar vibration when the headsteady snapped a stud from the top of the engine. Luckily Axle knew a guy locally who welded me up a new one so that I could get home in some comfort :D
If you are experiencing some vibes do check to see your head is properly fastened to the frame.

Is your yanclone fitted with a balancer shaft? If so, it will be far smoother than a petrol Enfield, which is an undersquare design, (small bore long stroke). Not done very many miles yet on mine, but the engine is silky smooth in terms of reciprocal mass, & seems to get smoother the higher the revs. At 3800 I can barely feel it at all! Although that might be due to the governor reigning in the fuelling to prevent the engine ascending any further. But short answer, is that the Yanclone is a very oversquare design (large bore 86 mm short stroke 70 mm) & shouldn't make any long journey discomfort of its own.

turned out to be a number of issues with the engine mounting but now resolved and the vibes aren't bad at all.
