Re: Would this work? Rev Counter

That's disappointing. I suspect it's simply not fast enough to count the 1800 pulses per second at 3600 rpm. 30 pulses per revolution at 20 rpm is only 600 pulses per minute... not even close to the 108,000 pulses required. Are you certain the rev counter is expecting 30 pulses per revolution. I sus...

You could press in 30 small rare earth magnets and use a hall effect sensor, this would eliminate the oil contamination issue.

This site has a wide selection of magnets in all sizes and shapes:

Re: Would this work? Rev Counter

I wonder If I could utilize the first design, and paint the pattern on on actual flywheel itself and then point the photo sensor onto the flywheel? Painting the flywheel would work, painting 30 segments will take some time. The advantage of the drilled or slotted disk is that you likely could maint...

Re: Would this work? Rev Counter

Any idea what type of signal my current tach is looking for, I am assuming its looking for 30 pulses to 12v WRT ground? It shouldn't be hard to replicate this with the photosensor method if it is :) Correct, You are looking for an optical encoder that has 30 holes/slots in the wheel. You should be ...

Re: Would this work? Rev Counter

Do you know if the output of the circuit shown is a voltage based signal or a pulse based? Have you read the page? It has a LOT of information. It is pulse based. Basically most tachometers monitor the spark plug pulses, this method uses an optical pickup to provide the on-off pulse. From the page:...

I have thought about this myself. I wonder how small you could make one and still get results? Here's a good read on the topic: http://www.academicjournals.org/jpge/PDF/Pdf2011/March/Roy%20et%20al..pdf From the conclusion of the above document: "A simple cyclonic separator reduces PM from diese...

Re: 2Deuce is a noob

I don't think I want the expense of new, but would be interested in used. Then the question is what to look for. Would a torque converter work with the lower RPM's of the diesel or would a gearbox be needed with it. CVT would be something that I should look into. What are you using in your KX500? T...

Re: KX500 + Yanclone

I had ordered an Enfield 5 Speed brand new from a guy in India off Ebay. It was suppose to take a month or so to arrive. So I have been playing with the torque converter option. Well the transmission arrived last Friday. This thing is a bit larger than expected  I guess I'll be saving this for...

right, so many places say they cant bore this out because its hardened steel. Am I going crazy or is this a lot harder than it should be :) Any ideas? To take off 1mm with a hone is a LOT of material... as you discovered. I suspect the bushing is case hardened. Any shop with a tool post grinder sho...

Re: Would this work? Rev Counter

I assume this is an analog tachometer? I've seen it done optically on VW diesels (my weakness) so I imagine the hal effect would work similarly well. This page also discusses digital tachs. http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/CheapTricks/Tachometer/index.shtml http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/CheapTricks/T...

Re: KX500 + Yanclone

I was hoping to keep the original 6.75 inch center distance and use the original mounting plate by simply remaking the aluminum jackshaft quill from steel. Today I decided to remove the quill and see how everything looks. No joy. I guess I'm back to the longer center distance. :( Here are some pictu...

Re: KX500 + Yanclone

I am a little confused too actually now that I read more. I thought a torque converter was more like an old go cart clutch on end and a set pulley/sprocket size on the other. What I read now is that once past idle they (T.converter and CVT) seem to operate in same conceptual way with two pullys who...

Re: KX500 + Yanclone

Is the center-to-center distance on the stock unit too short to tuck the driven shaft in the notch of the engine by the pump? If you can, could you run the driven shaft and jack shaft on out to the right of the engine and use a cog belt to drive them. I redesigned everything this morning. The previ...

Re: KX500 + Yanclone

Just re-read your thread, are you making a new Mounting plate for your CVT ? If so have a look at my thread, I didn't need to take of that much at all to make it fit, is your engine a copy of the 300cc yanmar ? The motor is the 186F which is a clone of the L100 Yanmar I believe. It's sold as a 10 h...

Re: KX500 + Yanclone

After playing with the layout I decided to install a GTC TC2 Torque Converter (TAV2 clone) that I had. I simply don't have the space to put the 5 speed without lengthening the frame  I figured I'd need to grind a little, maybe drill some new holes... no such luck, the kit mount is too short. Looking more hopeful this morning. I did some trimming and the motor is up where it should be. I'm hoping to fit an Enfield 5 Speed in here someplace... it hasn't arrived yet so I don't know the exact dimensions. It appears that I'll likely need to stretch the frame a few inches to make it all fit. ...

KX500 + Yanclone

Well this might be the shortest build thread... unless I get some inspiration tonight while I sleep on this build :? I came across a KX500 dirt bike rolling chassis that was prime for re-powering. Someone had cut out the engine basket... making it useless. I figured it would be a tight fit but being...

3D model of yanclone

Does anyone have a good 3d model of a 186F yanclone? I looked an the yanmar l100n 2d dxf but I couldn't find a 3d file. I did a quick sketch myself but I was hoping for something with more detail. I've attached a shot of my crude model.

Re: [Warning] Yanmar 404cc Clone Issue

That is correct. I couldn't believe it either. It's obviously done to save time/money in the clone factory, Yanmar do it properly. I cannot imagine spot welding a key! I'm surprised it held as long as it did. What brand is your clone? According to your picture,it is a tab on the right hand side tap...

Re: [Warning] Yanmar 404cc Clone Issue

Your saying that on your clone rather than a key slot being milled into the crank it had a key spot welded to the crank? Are you certain it didn't shear the key and you simply can't see where the slot originally was? Often the flywheel will smear the key leaving little evidence of the slot location....

Re: KX500 dirt bike and ENFIELD 5 SPEED

I suspect your right. I know I'm taking a huge hit on horse power with the diesel. Stock the kx500 runs around 59 hp! My target top speed is only about 30 mph (50 km/h). I'm thinking I'll drop the chain ratio until I get something usable. Maybe a 14 tooth on the output. This would give me a top spee...

KX500 dirt bike and ENFIELD 5 SPEED

Hi all,

Anyone have any experience or thoughts with using an Enfield 5 speed on a dirt bike? I'm building a KX500 for trail riding using a yanmar l100 clone. Top speed isn't as important as being able to climb. Do able or a dumb idea?

Thanks!
