Re: 1.6D Fiesta bike build

Well, this is it. End of the line. Although it's more of a "derail, crash and burn" kind of stop, as opposed to actually arriving at the intended destination. Effectively, this build is permanently and irrevocably dead, with no hope of any recovery. I had considered writing a more detailed...

Re: 1.6D Fiesta bike build

Off subject a bit, but makes me think of Oldsmobiles 350ci gas engine that they converted to diesel for the GM trucks, worked, but not the best. FWIW, it's much more feasible to convert a car engine to diesel, than a bike engine. The form factor is about the same; really you just need a diesel head...

Well, I don't want to make you depressed... No worries there, buddy - I seriously doubt you could make it significantly worse, even if you tried. Isn't moving to a new house an option to solve your workplace requirements? Sounds like you'd need it, not only for the dieselbike. ...but then you run i...

Re: 1.6D Fiesta bike build

Eh, just thinking about all of this makes me more depressed. In the end, I'd say it all comes down to the amount of effort required, relative to the benefits. Which would you say is better? A difficult, backbreaking job, or an easy, undemanding one, if both result in about the same salary, and both ...

Re: 1.6D Fiesta bike build

Damn it all, it's really not about the fuel cost. Man, how I wish that was my only worry. Also, "cheap enfield diesel" are, IMO, 3 words that should never appear in a single sentence, let alone consecutively - in the last few years, I've only encountered 1 or 2 diesel Enfields put up for s...

Good news, everyone! ... is what I wish I could say. Sadly, the bad news far outweigh the good, in this case. So, without further ado, let me get everyone's hopes up... and then proceed to crush them mercilessly, because that's just how life (t)rolls. For the "good" news, I bring you these...

Re: 1.6D Fiesta bike build

That has been proven untrue many times over. Whatever, I'm not going to force the point here, seeing as turbocharging systems are not really my area of expertise. One thing that is 100% certain though: we own a Golf mk3 1.9TDI (90hp), with the same exact model of turbo I plan to use on the bike. Th...

Re: 1.6D Fiesta bike build

Intercooling is beneficial at every pressure level. Indeed, it is as you say. It is, in fact, essential for maximizing the power gain that can be extracted from a given setup. Charge air density is maximized, while also minimizing the EGTs. However, it also has its drawbacks: - increased cost, - in...

Re: 1.6D Fiesta bike build

Well, it's been a while since the last update. The original plan was to hold off on updating until the compressor is finished. But, as usual, things got derailed along the way, and the estimated completion date is getting repeatedly pushed further forward. So I decided to post an update anyway, espe...

Well, that issue is pretty much resolved now. A few days after my previous post, that very point was raised at a meeting of the higher-ups (including the boss and the director, of course). I wasn't present at the meeting - which is fine by me, since they usually happen "after hours" anyway...

Re: 1.6D Fiesta bike build

I was just reading upthread folks comments on air receivers. In the UK, anyone (even Lidl / Aldi) selling this cheap stuff has to bear liability if something blows up - so whoever they buy them off, they must be confident that they're not going to kill anyone. Well, there is a small problem. Assumi...

Re: 1.6D Fiesta bike build

Impressive tough, the thieves here have yet to try and steal railroad tracks. Probably because they're far less valuable, by an order of magnitude. OTOH, they're also much easier and "safer" to steal than the traction wiring. Nice! Ever thought about a job in analytic physics? No, not rea...

Sounds like my current neighborhood! All-tough here they also do it to buy more weed at the coffeeshops. They're creative enough to steal the copper wires away from above the train tracks. Re: 1.6D Fiesta bike build

The machine's specs Aha, rated at 25% duty cycle... which effectively means VERY light duty. 3400rpm @50Hz? Definitely NOT physically possible with an induction motor. Either it uses a universal motor - rather unlikely at such a "low" RPM range though - or the sticker is outright lying (g...

Re: 1.6D Fiesta bike build

To my untrained eye the welds on my units tank look OK, not pretty but OK. Nevertheless, once I am done with it, I completely depressurize it every time to be sure. Any visible undercut on the welds is a serious cause for concern. Although minor undercut might not be visible through the (relatively...

Re: 1.6D Fiesta bike build

Nah. In fact, there's your problem. One thing which was very apparent from dissecting the failed unit - these cheap compressors are not built for any type of serious use, and definitely built to a price point. The motors use very thin magnet wire, way too thin to handle the amps on a continuous basi...

Thanks. Too late for the compressor, though. I opened it up today. And... it's dead, Jim. Autopsy report states C.O.D. as "terminal case of Made In China". Main symptoms - deep fried windings (very black!), and signs of a small fire inside the motor casing. It also cites the following aggr...

Re: Jump start conections

A lot of trucks use a similar setup, usually right from the factory, but with threaded steel studs instead of the lead posts. Grips much better and avoids the problems of using lead. Also for safety reasons the posts are spaced wider apart and/or have an insulating partition between them, to prevent...

Re: 2008 Kawasaki KLR456 Diesel Dualsport Project

We use quite a lot of 3D metal printing at work - and several other novel manufacturing methods for rapid prototyping. It'll be a little while before anyone uses them to make crank cases directly :-( Just for reference, how expensive is it? And in what material? I don't know the pricing here in Pol...

Re: 2008 Kawasaki KLR456 Diesel Dualsport Project

Rokon made them with a diesel for a short while. Used a Hatz. It didn't go over well cause the size of the engine just does not work in there they said. Rokon is built around a tilted engine allowing for the short in height engine bay. Ground clearance dropped literally to fit the diesel in there. ...

Re: 2008 Kawasaki KLR456 Diesel Dualsport Project

Are you by any chance considering converting the Rokon to diesel power? Looking at the design, such a conversion seems relatively uncomplicated, seeing as the Trailbreaker is already factory-designed to use an industrial engine. The lower-displacement yanclones (not the ~400cc ones) would most likel...
