Personally I think a 2-stroke diesel with a 4-stroke bottom end and an unusual scavenging system is the way to go to get a compact, efficient, powerful (relatively) engine, but funnily enough that's not without its issues either ;) What about the PatPortLess design ? http://www.pattakon.com/patport...
